About the Centre

The Spaceguard Centre is located at the former Powys County Observatory near Knighton in mid-Wales. Sited at the top of a hill, the observatory offers outstanding panoramas in all directions, and a clear 360o horizon. It was opened in 1995 as a private institution devoted to Public Understanding of Science (PUS).

The original owners built the observatory specifically with public outreach in mind, and equipped the observatory with high quality equipment for astronomical, seismological and climatological research and education.

For five years (95-00) the facility was open to the public, and acquired a first class reputation as a local and national attraction, as well as providing resources for researchers. Sadly, in mid 2000, the original owners were forced to leave the observatory due to health problems. The property was subsequently purchased by Mr. Andrew Thompson who has been the major contributor to the establishment of the Spaceguard Centre.
